Finally…

Well, the films is done…sort of! After 6 years we have a cut that we can shop around to festivals, funders and broadcasters. But the work is never really done. In fact, many would say it has just begun. We have decided to cut an hour version (the current cut is 86 mins.) for better broadcast opportunities within PBS. We hope to broadcast in the Fall, but with the excitement of a ground-breaking presidential race, we may opt to postpone. The fact of the matter is that it’s going to be pretty hard to compete with that main event.
The good news: we had an Oakland screening for friends, family and crew this past Winter. Myariah from Youth Sounds opened the event by performing the title track to our film that she both wrote and composed. Myryiah and Robert Collins from B.U.M.P. were so amazing to work with. Myariah watched one cut of the film and came back to us a couple weeks later with her song. We were floored. It was perfect! We ended up using a lot of B.U.M.P. music for our score, because it just worked so well with the characters and setting of the film.
Three of the four girls from the film were able to attend with their families and I know we should have just sent a limo out to Esmeralda because she was the only one who couldn’t make it. We had a lively Q & A with the audience and everyone was eager to ask the girls a bunch of questions. They were kinda shy at first with the exception of Rosie, who proclaimed that although she never wants to watch the film again, it was worth it just meeting us. On her own volition she asked if she could have a bake sale in the back and ended up raking in a few hundred dollars. The young entrepreneur in action!
Thank you to Ami Zins and Janet Austin from the Oakland Film Commission and everyone at KTOP for hosting this hometown event.
What else? Well lots. We’ve started showing the film to classes, educators, class and girl groups. To date, we have screened at the Julia Morgan School for Girls with the San Francisco Film Society, to Pat Ferrero’s SFSU (my alma mater) Bay Area Filmmakers’ survey course, and to my pal Jamie Meltzer’s Graduate Doc class at Stanford. We have a few more lined up and are sending DVDs out all the time to get people to review and endorse it.
All that to say, stay tuned. We’ve only just begun.
