LA FEMME Film Festival
By Dawn | October 28, 2008
The last two weeks have been a whirlwind for us and the film! On Friday 10/17/08 Kristy and I were asked to present our film as the case study for the NALIP/9th Street Media Center/LPB, etc…”DOING YOUR DOC” workshop. WHAT A BIG HONOR!! The Documentary Doctora-Fernanda Rossi –was the guest presenter and Kathryn Galan, the Executive Director of NALIP was the facilitator. We screened the entire film and were asked a lot of great questions. I hope it was helpful. I really enjoy talking about the process. After this year of film festivals it is great to remember all of the hard work that went into creating the film–and hopefully helping others not make the same mistakes!!
On Sat 10/18/08 we had our big SF Premiere at the ROXIE with the SF DOC FEST and a party afterward. There were girls from GIRLS INC of Alameda County and girls and mentors from the local DELTA Sorority. The theater was packed. My niece and inspiration for the film was there. She’s a junior in HS now and just a lovely young woman. My mom, brother and nephew were there too! It was wonderful to have so many family members and friends at the screening. Thank you all for coming! The party was fun too. We held the the after-party at a local non-profit-Mission Graduates . THANKS Jeff and Aaron for helping us out. Isha and her mother and brother were great. Isha did a great job of representing for the other girls who were all super busy and couldn’t make the screening. Thanks ISHA you are a star!
I left for LA at 6 am the next morning to go to the LA FEMME Film Festival Awards GALA.
We were nominated for BEST DOCUMENTARY so I HAD to attend. Unfortunately, Kristy could not make it. It was a good thing I was there, too: WE WON!! This is our first award! I was SUPER nervous to get up and make an acceptance speech. I wish I had prepared better. I guess I just didn’t believe it until it happened. They gave awards to some amazing women actors and producers (check their website out to see the list) and it was an honor to be on the same stage as these incredible women. I will post the award in a few weeks…they gave us SO MUCH fun SWAG that I didn’t have time to pack it all so my good, sister-friend in LA will be fed ex’ing it to me soon. The only bummer, for me, was that they only listed Kristy’s name on the award. OH WELL! I didn’t do this for the fame!! I do wish now that they had paid for the plane ticket…
I HIGHLY recommend this film festival to ALL women producers/ directors. They REALLY know how to throw a party. Thank you!!
Our screening on Wed 10/22/08 was so much more filled than I thought it would be! Thanks to all of the Davis Street FRC crew that came out to support us. I also got to see a few really good friends that I have been out of contact with…hopefully this means we’ll see each other again soon. Ariana and Esme were AMAZING!! They really did a great job of sharing their thoughts on the process of filming and being in the project. I admire them so much!
For about a week straight I worked and participated in events from 8 am to 11 pm or later. I am still wiped out! Fortunately, I didn’t get sick, my son has been a trouper and the festival run in nearing completion. I can’t thank all of you who have been so supportive an helpful through all of this enough! You are all super stars!
