The City of Angels-a homecoming of sorts
By Dawn | September 20, 2008
When Kristy and I heard that GOING ON 13 was selected to the LA Latino International Film Festival we were thrilled. LA was our childhood home, where we both became 13, where we made that grand transition from childhood to adolescence. To put it simply, where it all began! We were going home with going on 13!
We decided that since the festival could not pay for both of us to fly or for two hotel rooms that we’d split up. I wanted to drive, to have a CAR in LA, of course! I wanted to stay with my dear childhood friend (who also went through puberty with me! yikes!), her husband and their daughter, my beautiful goddaughter. My friend is a great filmmaker herself and you should check out her film, REVERSION.
The hotel room Kristy got at the Roosevelt on Hollywood Blvd was beautiful and I had to laugh..as a teen working at the Paramount and Pantages Theaters friends and I would sneak in and swim there! (I only did it a couple of times! I was too freaked out about getting caught).
I can’t tell you how many hours I spent on Hollywood Blvd as a teen. It’s the reason I had NO desire to get into the “Industry.” I spent many a late night with my theater friends listening to their tales of woe and poverty as they tried to get into the “Biz.” I think that’s when I decided I should b a social worker!!
It was a THRILL to screen at the World Famous Mann Chinese Theater! I only wish my mom could have made it.
The film festival was great, the people were nice and the Gala Event, with Antonio Banderas (yes, you read that right!), was thrilling. I think Kristy is a great dancer!!
The screening went well despite a few technical snafus–the audience was able to appreciate the film even though for some reason our perfectly working DigiBeta tape went out of sync!! We spent the rest of the day at the GRILL at the big crazy mall with the guys dressed as superheros standing in front. Kristy’s family was sweet and my crew held their own. It was nice to be appreciated. I even had some high school friends show up. That was cool. We’ve all grown up.
As usual Hollywood Blvd was surreal. It was fun and I LOVE THE BAY AREA!!
Which leads me to this:
Join us in San Francisco and Berkeley in October and early November at the SF DOC FEST:

Wed, Oct 22 2008, 7:15 pm | Roxie Cinema
Sun, Nov 2 2008, 7:15 pm | Shattuck Cinema
Our big Roxie screening is Saturday, the 18th, and we will not only have a panel afterwards, but a live performance. The filmmakers and girls from the film will be at all of the events!
We look forward to seeing you all there!!
