Finishing up my Tribeca Experience
By Dawn | May 27, 2008
Hey there,
It takes me a while to report on what’s going on because I have a kid and full time job and lots of other things that get in the way of telling you all about our adventures. In fact Rigo is saying right now, “Mom can you read to me? mom, can you read to me? mom! can you read to me?” Our nightly ritual is really important.
At the same time I really want to tell you about some of the cool stuff that has happened while we were in the Big Apple:
1) besides just making it to Tribeca I got to hang out with my good friend, Shawn Batey. She’s making a film on the gentrification on Harlem, The Changing Face of Harlem. Shawn invited us to see Harlem through her eyes! A few of us, who were able to wake up at 8 am (!!), went to Harlem, ate at Amy Ruth’s (YUM! Chicken and Waffles, what could be better?), got a view of one of the coolest, most amazing parts of this historic city and shopped! (Ariana found her “pastries” I have NO IDEA what that means! but they were cool sneakers!)
2) Shawn, one of the few women in a union that will go un-named, invited us back stage to see what she was up to on the set of BIG, UP-COMING FILM about a New York RAPPER whose life was cut short. The girls got pulled on to the stage and may even appear in the film!
3) Once the girls, Rob and Harolina were gone Kristy and I were busy with meetings and interviews and basically running all day. Laurene was up to her own devices and it is said she walked the depth and breadth of the city. And guess who she found?
I know! shocking! Elmo was just hanging out, checking out the Radio City scene and Laurene was lucky enough to get his autograph. I have to say he was a lot more gracious than that Julie Roberts! Oh well!
4) Ok, ok. We did end up at some parties.
New York was great and the folks who put on the Tribeca Festival were THE BEST! Aimee, Beth, Landon, Dominic, David, Whit, Gretchen, and everyone else…you made our launching of the film special and fun!
Abrazos grandes to Sue McD our stylist; Lady L, our chaperone and Elmo lovah; Carolina, our ground crew; SaraN , the AP Queen; Jackie and Purcell, lodging and accommodations galore! Rob and BAVC for supporting Myariah (and to Myariah of course! yu rock lil’ sis!); Mitch and Tim for coffee gifts from Zocalo Coffeehouse; and of course Harolina, Ariana and Rosie for making it super special! Much love to Kristy for helping me hold it all together and being da best partner, evah!
Next up…Portland and story about a guy I met when I was 13!
